DoD Secure Disposal of Vaccine Vials and Packaging Recommendations
(Brookfield, WI - May 25th, 2021) PharmEcology Services, WM Sustainability Services
On May 18, 2021, the Department of Defense published follow-up recommendations to ensure that used COVID 19 vaccine supplies, including empty vials and packaging, are not available for counterfeiting operations and potential re-introduction into the marketplace. The primary recommendations include the following:
- Vials and packaging: treat vials and packaging similarly to medical waste by placing in red sharps container (preferred method); or
- Deface all or safely crush materials so they cannot be reintroduced or reproduced. After the products are sufficiently defaced, then dispose with regular waste.
- Dispose of unused vaccine appropriately – DO NOT send back to the manufacturer. Discard all open and broken vials and syringes, manufacturer-filled syringes that have been activated, and vaccine pre-drawn by providers according to state requirements.
- Vaccines are only available and administered through State authorized vaccination locations, including healthcare facilities and pharmacies. Non-medical persons are not authorized to provide, sell, or administer vaccines.
